When Whitton flooded..............
This was on  Sunday 6th June 1982 when 3 and 3\4 inches fell in the space of just an  hour and a half. The drains in the field above  Blacksmith's Hill  became blocked and a large lake formed in a natural bowl . After a while the lake began to spill over the field boundary, just about where the old Blacksmith's shop had stood. First a trickle began to overflow and soon that trickle became a torrent as the bank gave way, inundating Main Street and the middle of Whitton. The pressure of water and silt brought down the stone garden wall at the Manor House and the water cascaded over the fields to Humber View Farm where it drowned poultry. This release of water onto agricultural land probably saved the village from greater damage. The roads were flooded above axle depth and  tractors were the only practical transport until the waters and silt were cleared  away...
